What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a holistic bodywork that works on the fascia, muscles and connective tissues with gentle but effective moves. It provides fast pain relief for sporting injuries, musculoskeletal symptoms, stress and tension discomfort, body balancing, bronchial symptoms, and many others. It is a also a support to aid healing for most health conditions. Bowen therapy can be used for re-setting nerve endings and receptors that control movement, balance and muscle tension by shifting the body from sympathetic to parasympathetic mode. Only when the body is relaxed and at ease, can it heal properly.
How Does Bowen Therapy Work?
In Bowen Therapy, we treat the body as a whole and not in parts. Bowen therapy induces the healing response in the body by sending messages to the brain via proprioceptors in the fascia. The gentle Bowen moves at specific points prompt the body to let go of tension, stress and emotional burden. After the sensory information induced by the Bowen move reaches the spinal cord, it passes through the nerve pathways to different segments of the brain. The information is then transported back and forth via a complex, self- correcting mechanism. Following this, the information is sent back to the spinal cord to individual muscles. This way, we can re-balance our body to the original alignment that is stored innately in our brains. Basically, Bowen Technique is all about your own body doing the work; the Bowen therapist activates signals to your brain, and your body does the rest.
How can Bowen Therapy Help?
Common ailments such as neck and back pain, headaches and the body’s alignment, which are common complaints of people with desk-bound jobs, can be treated with Bowen Therapy. Bowen Therapy also helps treat joint, respiratory, digestive and fertility issues just to name a few.
What is a Bowen Treatment Like?
It is suggested that you arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment so that the therapist can perform the necessary assessments. The treatment involves lying on a massage table for 30 minutes to an hour. Once treatment begins, the therapist will apply gentle pressure on the areas of the body such as the fascia, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints where there are high concentration of receptors. There are necessary pauses between each set of moves to allow the body to respond, integrate and heal. It should be noted that conversation must be kept to a minimum during treatment, as the brain is processing the signals stimulated by the moves and preferably not be disrupted.
What should I wear for a Bowen treatment?
Bowen Therapy works best on skin, so suitable undergarments would be preferred. But if a client would like to be clothed while receiving treatment, it is suggested that light clothing be worn so that the fascia, muscles, ligaments and tendons can be reached. There are procedures which cannot be done through clothing and the client will be advised accordingly.
How often are Bowen treatments recommended?
Depending on each individual’s needs, the frequency of Bowen treatments vary. Sessions commonly last between 30-45 minutes. It is generally recommended that Bowen treatments are on a schedule of 3 treatments 5-7 days apart. With these 3 sessions we can see how well Bowen will help particular concerns. Some patients may require only one treatment, finding immediate relief. Some require the full 3 sessions and others may require a more long term approach . A common approach to long term prevention is a maintenance treatment once every 4-6 weeks. With Bowen Therapy, there are no sign-ups for packages and such.
